KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Union put itself in position to win its third Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament championship in a row, but the Lady Bulldogs came up just shy of completing the task as third-seeded Montreat (N.C.) posted the 3-1 victory for the title Friday.

The tournament was held at the MeadowView Resort & Conference Center in Kingsport, Tenn.

Union finishes the season 20-17 overall.

Montreat took the early lead in the match with a 25-19. However, Union fought back and pulled out a 25-23 decision in the second frame to even the match.

The Lady Cavaliers (25-13 overall), though, took control of the match and sealed the match and championship with identical 25-16 scores in the third and fourth frames for the 3-1 victory.

Lauren McMillan (Corbin, Ky.) paced Union with 13 kills and three total blocks, while Cat Neumann (Louisville, Ky.) hammered home 12 kills to go with two blocks. Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) added nine kills and four total blocks.

Kalia Yasak (Kula, Hawaii) had 37 assists with Chelsea Kirschman (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) posting four blocks and three kills.

Cantrell and Neumann represented Union on the All-Tournament Team with Natalie Nieman (MVP), Sydney Koon and Hannah Scholz representing Montreat. Chelsie Blackburn and Taylor Fink of Bryan (Tenn.) and Caitlin Brickley and Jennifer Monroe of Columbia (S.C.) also made the All-Tournament Team.

Union advanced to the title match with a 3-0 sweep of Columbia earlier on Friday. The Lady Bulldogs took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-18 and had to hold on for the 25-23 in the third to complete the sweep.

McMillian had another 13 kills to go with three total blocks, and Cantrell followed with 10 kills and two blocks. Kirschman notched seven kills and three total blocks, while Neumann had seven kills and Caity Merritt (Abingdon, Va.) finished with three kills and three blocks.

Yasak served up 38 assists.
