BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Union College's Brent Cork scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Bulldogs in an 85-71 victory over Brescia in NAIA men's basketball action on Saturday night at Robsion Arena.

ith the win, Union moved to 2-5 on the season, while Brescia dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

"This was a good team win for us," said head coach Sean Gillespie. "Brent Cork (Saginaw, Mich.) was the difference for us, he made things happen on both sides of the floor when [Brescia] was making a run. We shared the ball around, and everyone contributed. I couldn't be happier for the guys."

In the first period, both teams played it tight for the first five minutes, with UC holding a slim 16-15 led with 13 minutes left. The Bulldogs then raced out to a 9-0 run, punctuated by a Stuart Stamper (Hindman, Ky.) lay-in that gave them a 25-15 lead with 10:38 left in the half. Union continued to put pressure on Brescia, eventually extending their lead out to 40-26 after a Cody Miller (Barbourville, Ky.) lay-in with four minutes left in the half.

Union kept up the pace the rest of the period, and coasted into the locker room for intermission with a 49-36 lead. Ian Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led all UC scorers in the half with nine points.

In the second half, it was more of the same for the Bulldogs in the first couple of minutes, as they firmly held a 60-45 lead after a three-pointer by Stamper with 14 minutes left. Despite some runs at the lead by Brescia over the next couple of minutes, the Bulldogs still had a 15-point lead (65-50) with 11:36 left after a Mickey Lewis (Franklin, Ky.) lay-in.

It was here that Brescia made things interesting, going on a frantic 15-2 run over the next five minutes to get UC's once insurmountable lead all the way down to two points (67-65) with 6:31 left. But, UC put an end to the rally seconds later, as Stamper drained a big three to put UC up 70-65 with 5:48 left.

Stamper's three sparked a 9-0 rally that put the game out of Brescia's reach, as Union took a 78-65 lead after Cork made two free throws with a little over three minutes left in regulation. The Bulldogs proceeded to salt the game away at the free throw line over the final moments, and notched an impressive 14-point win at home.

Overall, Cork's 20 point night was aided by an impressive 6-of-8 shooting performance from the charity stripe. He also snatched seven rebounds, and dished out a career-high seven assists.

Stamper, meanwhile, had 15 points off the Bulldog bench, aided by a 3-of-4 shooting performance from outside the arc. The other double-digit scorers on the night for UC were Ryan Young (Waynesburg, Ky.) and Josh Hurd (Independence, Ky.), who each had 10 points. Hurd also puled seven rebounds in the win.

Brescia was led in the loss by Bryce Garrett, who led four double-digit scorers for the Bearcats with 14 points.

Union returns to action on Friday when they host Berea at Robsion Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
