TOWSON, Md. - Junior offensive lineman Jonathan Shipley has named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Football Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Tazewell, Tenn., native is only the second Union football player to make the Academic All-America Team, joining Patrick O'Neal who made the second team in 2007.

Shipley is one of only six players from the Mid-South Conference to make the team. Two made the first team with four earning spots on the second team.

A human performance major, Shipley started and played in 10 games on the Bulldog offensive line. He helped anchor the line the lead the way for Union to average 24.2 points per game, 4,303 yards in total offense and for the fifth 1,000-yard rusher in program history.

The College Division Academic All-America® football team is comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.

To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum 3.30 grade-point average and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games.
