BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Union College swimming coach Rafael Forti
has announced that Vinicius Rossi has signed a letter of intent to join the UC men's swimming program. Rossi will join the team at the start of the 2012 Spring Semester.
Rossi will transfer into Union from UNICAMP, which is located in Campinas, Brazil. Rossi is a native of Sao Joao da Boa Vista, Brazil.
"I'm excited to be joining the program," said Rossi. "I feel that this will be a great team to be a part of, and a team where I can be pushed everyday to work hard."
""I could not be happier to have a student-athlete of Vinicius' caliber joining our program," said Forti. "He will provide a positive impact right away, both in practice and competition, and will help us with more depth in our breaststroke events as well as butterfly and IM events.
"He also is not only a great swimmer, but he is a fine student. He will also prove to be a valid asset to our college in the classroom as he has a great background in Math and Physics, and is transferring in from one of the best universities in Brazil. We expect big things from him."
This past year in Brazil, Rossi has racked up some distingushed honors for his impressive swimming.
He captured the Sao Paulo State Championship in the 100-breast, and also won Regional titles in the 100 and 200-breast, and the 400-medley relay. This led to Rossi winning the Brazilian National Championship in the 200-medley relay, while being a national runner-up in both the 50 and 100-breast.
Finally, Rossi was the Mercosul Cup Champion in both the 50 and 100-breast (he set a new meet record in this event at the meet).
Rossi, who swam club for Clube Fonte Sao Paulo Campinas in Brazil, also won an honorable mention award at the Brazilian Math Olympics. He is the son of Ricardo and Edina Rossi, and will major in math, while minoring in physics at Union College.
