ROME, Ga. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced Friday that 244 football student-athletes have been named 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and Union linebacker Zach Eagler is among them.
Student-athletes are nominated by their institution's head coach and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status in order qualify for the honor.
Despite missing two games due to injury, Eagler (Florence, Ky.) finished tied as the team's third-leading tackler with 45 total stops. In all, he had 16 solo tackles and two tackles for a loss.
Eagler was selected by the Mid-South Conference's athletic directors as the football student-athlete Champions of Character recipient. Eagler was selected based on his character-driven and civic leadership within his team, campus and community.
Union finished the season 2-9 overall and 1-5 in the MSC West.
