BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Six Union College men's basketball players scored in double figures on the night, as the Bulldogs defeated Virginia Intermont, 110-102, in overtime on Saturday evening in Appalachian Athletic Conference action at Robsion Arena.
With the win, Union improved to 4-15 on the year, 1-4 in the AAC, and halted a 10-game losing streak. Virginia Intermont fell to 8-8 overall, 1-3 in the AAC with the loss.
In the first half, VI raced out to an early lead, and held it through the first 15 minutes of play. Union, however, came back to take their first lead of the night with 5:56 left in the period (34-31) after Ian Davis
(Cherry Hill, N.J.) knocked down a three. The Cobras countered this comeback though, and quickly took the lead back a few minutes later.
VI ended the half on a good note, as Justin Morris hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Cobras a 46-41 lead going into the locker room for intermission.
To start the second half, VI continued to control the contest, eventually taking a 64-58 lead with 12 minutes left. It was here that Union made their run at the lead, quickly tying the game up at 64 apiece with 11 minutes left after a Josh Smith
(Corbin, Ky.) lay-in. VI quickly took the lead back, but Union punched back again, and took their first lead of the period with 8:27 left (71-69) after another Smith lay-in.
The rest of the half saw the lead swing back and forth numerous times, to the point that the game was all knotted up at 82-all with one minute left in regulation. In the last minute, Stuart Stamper
(Hindman, Ky.) knocked down two-of-four free throws to make it 86-84 UC with 29 seconds left.
VI then got the ball back, and on their last possession of regulation, cashed in when Neven Raspudic knocked down a jumper that tied it up at 86. On the Bulldogs' last possession of regulation, Ryan Young
(Waynesburg, Ky.) missed a jumper in the lane with three seconds left that would've won it, and the game went into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Bulldogs controlled things from the start, going on a 10-0 run in the first two minutes of play to take a 97-87 lead with three minutes left. The deficit was too much for the Cobras to come back from, as Union coasted down the stretch of the extra frame to notch their first victory in conference play this season.
Overall, Carlos Sanford
(Durham, N.C.) led all UC scorers scoring 22 points off the bench (on 6-of-9 shooting from the field). Smith, who also came off the bench, added a career-high 20 points, while Davis scored 14 points and snatched seven rebounds.
Other top scorers for the Bulldogs included Stamper, who had 12 points, while the double-digit scorers for UC were rounded out by Stefan Juzbasic
(Belgrade, Serbia) and James Strange
(Pineville, Ky.), who each scored 11 points, apiece. Also, Josh Hurd
(Independence, Ky.) pulled down a game and career high 14 rebounds in the victory.
For Virginia Intermont, Justin Morris led the way in a losing effort, scoring a game-high 35 points.
Union returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Milligan for another AAC matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
