BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Bryan (Tenn.) scored the final eight points of regulation to pull away from the Union College men's basketball team, 73-66, on Saturday evening in an AAC matchup at Robsion Arena.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 4-18 on the year, 1-7 in the AAC, while Bryan improved to 10-12 overall, and 5-3 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first half, the game was a defensive slugfest, as Bryan held just a 16-9 lead with under 10 minutes to go in the period. The Lions then extended the lead out to nine (21-12) with 5:34 left, which was their largest of the game to that point.
The Bulldogs, however, ended the half with a scoring flurry, going on a 16-8 run to end the period to cut the Bryan lead all the way down to a point at 29-28 with 10 seconds left. The Lions then hit two free throws with two seconds left, and took a slim 31-28 lead into the locker room for intermission.
To start the second half, the Bulldogs came out on fire, going on a 7-1 run over the first minute and half of the period to take a 37-32 lead. Union eventually extended the lead out to 10 (44-34) with 15:35 left after a Carlos Sanford
(Durham, N.C.) lay-in.
Over the next 10 and a half minutes, UC continued to lead the game, despite several runs by Bryan, and with 4:12 left, held a 61-54 lead. Here, Bryan began their run, going on a 11-3 run over the next few minutes to take their first lead since very early in the period at 65-64 after a Tim Fortenberry three with 1:51 left.
On their next trip down, Ian Davis
(Cherry Hill, N.J.) was fouled, and sank two free throws to give UC the lead back at 66-65 with 1:30 left.
Davis' second free throw proved to be the last point the Bulldogs would score in the game, as the Lions scored the final eight points of the contest to take the win in shocking fashion. In all, Bryan went on a 19-5 run over the final four minutes to clinch the ballgame.
Overall, Union was led in a losing effort by Davis, who scored 16 points. Davis was also a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Other double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs included Ryan Young
(Waynesburg, Ky.), who had 14 points, Josh Hurd
(Independence, Ky.), who scored 11, and Sanford, who chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
Bryan was led in the victory by Dion Fair, who has 16 points.
Union returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Bluefield in an AAC tilt. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
