ATHENS, Tenn. - No. 24 Union was unable to keep pace down the stretch as No. 20 and host Tennessee Wesleyan turned a tight contest into a 62-46 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
The loss drops Union to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in the AAC. Tennessee Wesleyan improves to 16-6 overall and 9-2 in league play.
Tied at 38-38 following a Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) bucket with 12:39 to play, Tennessee Wesleyan slowly began to pull away. Using a 16-4 run, Tennessee Wesleyan broke the game open in grabbing a 54-42 advantage with 5:29 remaining. The hosts closed out the game on an 8-4 surge to make the final 62-46.
Waters paced Union with 20 points while Alison Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) added 11 points. Union shot 29.4 percent (15-of-51 shots) from the field and made only 2-of-15 attempts from 3-point range. Union made up for it at the foul line, making 14-of-15 free throws.
For Tennessee Wesleyan, Cody Houck led the way with 22 points with Heather Gibson adding 19. Michelle Davis contributed 14 points in the win. Tennessee Wesleyan hit 41.4 percent (24-of-58 shots) from the floor and made 5-of-20 shots from long range.
Union returns to action Tuesday when it plays at Reinhardt (Ga.) in another AAC tilt. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
