BRISTOL, Va. - Senior forward Courtney Thomas equaled her career high in scoring, pouring in a team-high 17 points to help lead No. 24 Union to a 62-57 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over host Virginia Intermont on Saturday.

Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.) hit 6-of-10 shots and went 4-for-4 from the foul line in netting her 17 points. She last scored 17 against Tennessee Wesleyan on Dec. 4, 2010.

Union needed a big game out of Thomas and others with Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) kept in check. Averaging 21.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, Waters was limited to six points and six rebounds due to foul trouble in the first half and swarming defense when she was on the court.

With Waters' productivity drastically reduced, the rest of the Lady Bulldogs stepped up their game. In addition to Thomas, Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) poured in 16 points, while Brooke Hill (Sparta, Ky.) had nine points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Marah Rice (Scottsville, Ky.) and Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) each added seven points.

Union led most the game, but it still came down to the wire. Down 57-52, Virginia Intermont's Jayla Lane drained a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game with 26 seconds left. A pair of Thomas free throws pushed the margin back to four, but Teonika Webb scored on a driving layup to make it 59-57 with 15 seconds to play.

With 10 seconds to go, Perkins sank a two free throws for a 61-57 Union lead. Shelby May then missed a jumper, and Union got the ball back. Roberts hit 1-of-2 from the line with 2.4 seconds remaining to seal the 62-57 decision.

Webb led Virginia Intermont with 22 points with Rainey Story adding 15.

With the win, Union improves to 18-7 overall and 9-5 in the AAC. Virginia Intermont is 17-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play.

Union returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Milligan (Tenn.). Game time is 5:30 p.m.
