BRISTOL, Va. --
Virginia Intermont's Justin Morris scored a game-high 26 points, as the Cobras beat the Union College men's basketball team, 85-80, on Saturday evening in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
With the loss, UC fell to 6-21 overall, 3-10 in the AAC, while Virginia Intermont improved to 12-13 overall, 4-8 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first half, Virginia Intermont took control of action right from the start, leading for the majority of the period, as the Cobras went to the locker room at halftime with a 42-31 lead.
This lead proved too big for the Bulldogs to come back from in the second period. Despite making a few runs at the deficit, the last coming in the final minute that cut the lead all the way down to three points (82-79), Union could not come all the way back, as VI held on for the five-point home win.
Overall, Union was led in the loss by Carlos Sanford
(Durham, N.C.) and Josh Hurd
(Independence, Ky.), who each scored 18 points, apiece. Hurd also notched his fourth double-double in the last five games after grabbing 12 rebounds.
Other double-digit scorers on the night for the Bulldogs included Ian Davis
(Cherry Hill, N.J.), who finished with 15 points and also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds, and Josh Smith
(Corbin, Ky.), who had 14 points.
Morris led the Cobras and three other double-digit scorers in the victory for VI. VI also shot an impressive 54.3 percent from the floor in the win, compared to the 39.2 percent clip the Bulldogs ended the night with.
Union returns to action on Wednesday when they host Milligan in the squad's final home game of the 2011-12 season. The game, which is also the team's senior night, is set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
