MONTREAT, N.C. -- The Union College softball team captured a wild victory in game two, taking a 13-10 decision to earn a split in an Appalachian Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Montreat (N.C.) on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs lost game one, 7-6, in eight innings.

With the split, UC moved to 22-9 overall, 8-6 in the AAC, while Montreat went to 18-15 overall, 3-9 in the AAC with the results.

Game One
In game one, UC let a two-run lead slip away, as Montreat rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to steal a one-run win in extras.

The Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 3-1 lead after one, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Montreat, however, tied the game up at 3-all after two, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.

In the fifth, UC took the lead back, as Aryssa Puckett smacked her third home run of the year. The solo shot gave the Lady Bulldogs a 4-3 lead after five.

But, Montreat came back once again, as they scored a run in the bottom of the seventh off of relief pitcher Rachel Cogdill to tie the game up at four after seven. With the game tied, it went into extra innings with international tie-breaker rules in effect.

In the top of the eighth, Ashley Wojnowski had a big two-RBI triple that gave UC a 6-4 lead. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Montreat scored three runs off of Cogdill to complete the comeback and take a one-run home win.

Overall, Puckett was 2-for-4 with a home run, while Leighana Brett was also 2-for-4 with a run scored. Whitley Cochran was 2-for-4, as well, while Wojnowski's eighth inning triple was the fourth of her season.

In the circle, Cogdill took the loss (3-2) after giving up four runs and four hits in three innings of relief work. Abby Sears was the starter in game one, and took a no-decision, going five innings, giving up three runs, while striking out seven.

Game Two
In game two, the Lady Bulldogs bashed 16 hits, and hung on over the final innings to capture a three-run win, and a split in the twinbill.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead after two innings, UC scored four runs in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead after two and a half. Montreat, however, countered by scoring four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Lady Bulldog lead down to 7-6 after three.

In the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs put the game away, scoring six runs to take a 13-6 lead. In the inning, Madison McKinney had a two-RBI double, while Brooklyn Hesterberg hit a grand slam on a 3-2 count with two outs to give UC the seven run lead. The homer was the third of the season for the freshman.

Montreat still made a few more runs at the lead in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring four runs to cut the lead down to three. But, Sears came on in the sixth and shut down the Montreat lineup over the next inning to clinch the win for the Lady Bulldogs.

At the plate in game two, Hesterberg led the way, going 2-for-4 with six RBI. Along with the grand slam in the fourth, Hesterberg had a two-out, two RBI single in the third. The grand slam was also just the second hit by a UC player in program history, and the first since 2008 when Suzanah Behnken hit one against Bluefield.

Other top performers at the plate for the Lady Bulldogs were Puckett, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI, while Jamie Cyrus was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. McKinney rounded out the top players at the dish in the second game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the circle, Katie Perkins (7-4) was the winner, going five full innings. Sears (3) earned the save after tossing an inning, giving up just one run.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Monday when they travel to Pikeville (Ky.) for an out-of-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
