BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
The Union College softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday to No. 22 Reinhardt (Ga.), losing game one of a doubleheader, 4-0, then game two, 7-1, in Appalachian Athletic Conference play at Union Field.
With the losses, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 23-14 overall, and 8-8 in the AAC. Reinhardt moved to 30-9 on the year with the pair of wins, 12-2 in the AAC.
In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs failed to muster much of any offense against Reinhardt starter Maddie Monroe, as she tossed a complete game, one-hitter to pace the Lady Eagles to the four-run win.
Reinhardt took the lead in the second, when they capitalized on a UC error with two outs to score twice to go up 2-0 after an inning and a half. In the top of the third, the Lady Bulldogs once again made a critical error with two outs, enabling Reinhardt to score a run, and take a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles scored their fourth and final run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, as the four-run lead was more than enough for Monroe to work with.
In all, Monroe (16-6) struck out five, walked three, and gave up her lone hit in the bottom of the fifth, when Gina Loflin
(Salisbury, N.C.) notched the first hit of the day for UC.
For Union, Abby Sears
(London, Ky.) (11-5) was the loser, giving up four runs (one earned), and six hits, while striking out seven batters in six innings of work.
In the second game, Reinhardt completed the sweep, as the Lady Bulldogs' offensive struggles continued.
Union, however, did get off to a quick start, as Loflin hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first, scoring Madison McKinney
(Elizabethton, Tenn.), to give the Lady Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second, Reinhardt proceeded to score two runs in each of the next three innings to take a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Eagles added their last run in the top of the seventh, as UC failed to kickstart a comeback in the final two innings, stranding two runners on base in each frame.
In the circle, Katie Perkins
(Owensboro, Ky.) (7-5) took the loss in game two, tossing four innings, giving up four runs (three earned). For Reinhardt, starter Haley Brannon (10-1) went the distance, giving up a run on nine hits, while striking out three.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host Columbia (S.C.) at Union Field in another AAC doubleheader. First pitch for UC's home season finale is 12 noon. Tomorrow is also the program's annual senior day, in which five student-athletes will be honored before the game begins.
