WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Union volleyball team captured its first victory of the 2012 season, but the Lady Bulldogs were pushed to the limit as it pulled out the 3-2 decision over host Cumberlands (Ky.) on Tuesday.
Union (1-3 overall) took the first set 25-23 but dropped the next two frames 27-25 and 25-13 with Cumberlands rallying to seize momentum. The Lady Bulldogs battled back and won the fourth set 26-24 to force a fifth and final game. Cumberland (0-2 overall) continued to stand toe-to-toe with Union, but the Lady Bulldogs collected the 15-13 decision for the 3-2 match win.
Christa Hicks and Hollie Hopkins paced Union with 13 kills apiece, while Caity Merritt chipped in 12 kills of her own. Chandler Gray recorded 23 assists with Heather Fields contributed 21 assists. Gabrielle Kelly helped out with 25 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will play their first home match and conference match on Thursday when they play host to Reinhardt (Ga.) at 6 p.m.
