BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior Sofie Jorgensen's goal in the 77th minute was the difference, as Union College upended Rio Grande (Ohio), 1-0, in NAIA women's soccer action at Burch/Nau Field on Saturday afternoon. The match was the 2012 season opener for UC.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs moved to 1-0 on the young season, while Rio Grande fell to 0-2 with the loss.
In the first period, Union kept the ball on their end of the field for the majority of the 45 minute half, but failed to score, despite outshooting Rio 5-0. Rio Grande goalie Hannah Stickleman kept the Lady Bulldogs scoreless in the half, as she made three saves in net for the Redstorm
In the second half, Rio Grande began to mount an offensive attack, as Union continued to keep the pressure up on their end. Both teams let opportunities slip their fingers, however, including a shot by Union that hit the goalpost.
Then, with about 13 minutes left, Jorgensen broke the tie with a goal on a shot that was fired from five yards out. Jorgensen began to play the ball on the play from around the 30 yard line, and bobbed and weaved her way around the Rio Grande defense straight to the net in scoring the game-winner.
From there, UC's defense held, as goalie Stephanie Burton
earned the shutout victory. In all, the Union defense held Rio Grande to just four shots on the day, as Burton made a save on the only shot on goal the Redstorm had in the match.
Overall, Union held a big edge on shots at 16-4. Both teams took four corners, apiece, in the match, while Rio goalie Stickleman kept the Redstorm in it all afternoon after making four total saves.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Mid Western. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
