BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union volleyball team stayed perfect in Appalachian Athletic Conference play as it posted a 3-0 sweep over visiting St. Andrews (N.C.) on Thursday.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the AAC. St. Andrews fall to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Senior Cat Neumann led Union with 10 kills and a .571 hitting percentage, making only two errors in 14 attempts. Paige Moore followed with nine kills to go with three service aces, while Caity Merritt delivered seven kills and posted a .500 hitting percentage.
Union opened the first set with a 6-2 cushion, but St. Andrews rallied to cut the margin to 7-6. The Lady Bulldogs bounced back to claim a 16-7 cushion. During the rally, Moore hammered home three kills. Up 19-10, Union closed out the match by taking the final six points with Neumann recording three kills.
The second frame was very similar to the first as the Lady Bulldogs built a 14-3 advantage. Heather Fields had two service aces during the run. From that point on, the teams essentially swamped points as Union took the frame 25-11 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
St. Andrews kept the third set close, first by using a 4-0 rally to make it a 10-9 game and then finally tying the set at 16-all. St. Andrews made one last ditch to win a set, scoring four of five points to pull within 21-20. However, Union sealed the match with a 4-1 run, punctuating the win with a Hollie Hopkins ace.
In all, Union served up 14 aces with Fields accounting for five. Fields also had 12 assists, while Chandler Gray recorded 15. Gabrielle Kelly registered 10 digs with Brooke Porter recording six.
Taylor Clay led St. Andrews with four kills and five total blocks.
Union returns to action Friday when it plays Shawnee State (Ohio) at 2 p.m. and Georgetown (Ky.) at 8 p.m. at the Rumpke Invitational in Georgetown, Ky.
