BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Virginia Intermont's Jason Alber scored the eventual game-winner early in the second half, as the Cobras hung on for a 1-0 victory over Union College in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday at Burch/Nau Field.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 2-3 on the year, 0-1 in the AAC, while VI improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in the AAC with the victory.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams just miss on opportunities at the net, Alber came through with a goal in the 47th minute off a cross, just getting his shot by UC goalie Madison Justice to give the Cobras a one-goal lead.
From there, the Bulldogs let opportunities to score the equalizer slip through their fingers, as they could not get a shot past VI goalie Calvin Anderson, who made several critical saves in the period.
Union's last chance came in the final two minutes, after a VI foul set up a corner kick. However, a header by freshman Alfie Caruso went just wide of the net, and VI played keep away for the final minute to hang on for the conference victory.
Overall, Union outshot VI in the match 16-14, while corner kicks were even at 5-apiece. VI's Anderson earned the shutout win after making five total saves (four of which came in the second half). Justice was just as impressive for the Bulldogs in defeat, making four saves on the day.
The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Reinhardt (Ga.) for another AAC-matchup. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
