BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College forward Helen Weber scored the eventual game-winner in the eighth minute of play, as the Lady Bulldogs used a strong defensive effort to hold off Columbia (S.C.), 1-0, in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Burch/Nau Field.
With the win, UC moved to 4-1-1 overall, and remained unbeaten in the AAC at 3-0-1. Columbia fell to 7-3-1 with the loss, 2-1-1 in the AAC. The defeat was the first for the Fighting Koalas in eight matches.
In the first half, the Lady Bulldogs came out on fire on offense, and finished off one of their first attempts at net in the seventh minute with Weber's eventual game-winning goal.
From there in the first period, the Lady Bulldogs dominated play, outshooting Columbia 13-1 in the first 45 minutes. UC, however, failed to increase the lead, and went into intermission up a goal.
In the second half, the intensity went up a level, as both teams increased the pressure on the defensive end. Throughout the period, both teams had chances on goal, but failed to capitalize on their chances.
As the match went into its final moments, Columbia had once last chance after the Lady Bulldogs committed a foul. On the free kick, Columbia attempted to head in the ball in net, but UC goalie Stephanie Burton made the save on the shot.
The Lady Bulldogs then salted the final few minutes away to pick up the big AAC win at home.
Overall, UC outshot Columbia 20-5 in the match, holding a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks, as well. UC goalie Burton earned the shutout win for the Lady Bulldogs, while Columbia's Lauren Zarefoss and Elise Grider combined to make six saves on the afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Cumberlands (Ky.) for an out-of-conference match. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
