LEBANON, Tenn. - The Union College volleyball team split a pair of matches on the afternoon on Saturday at the Cumberland (Tenn.) Classic. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Martin Methodist (Tenn.), 3-1, and lost to Webber International (Fla.), 3-0.

With the results, UC moved to 8-10 on the year, going 2-2 on the weekend at the Cumberland Classic.

In the Martin Methodist match, the Lady Bulldogs dominated the final two sets on their way to the 3-1 win (25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16). 

In the first set, UC opened up a lead after things were tied up at 11 early on, going on a 7-1 run to go up 18-12. The Lady Bulldogs continued to keep up the pressure, and put things away with a 25-19 win in the opening set.

In the second set, Martin Methodist stormed back from a 14-10 deficit to earn a 25-22 win to knot things up at a set apiece. In the set, Martin Methodist took the final three points after things were tied at 22-all.

In the third set, Union controlled from the opening serve, opening up an 11-6 lead early, and never looking back in the 25-14 victory to go up two sets to one. 

It was a similar result in the fourth and final set, as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 25-16 win. UC opened another big early lead (14-7) and never looked back, on their way to the match clinching set victory. 

Overall in the win, Caity Merritt led the way with 18 kills and three block assists, while Paige Moore notched 11 kills and four digs. Cat Neumann also had a double-digit kill game with 10, while libero Gabrielle Kelly notched 14 digs to lead the Lady Bulldogs in that category. 

In their first match of the afternoon against Webber International (Fla.), the Lady Bulldogs could not get things going in the 3-0 loss (13-25, 16-25, 16-25). 

The Lady Bulldogs' best chance to win a set came in the second, where they opened an 11-7 lead early. Webber, however, scored 13 straight points to go up 20-11, and eventually took the set 25-16. Webber then finished things off in the third set, dominating things from the opening serve to a match-clinching 25-16 win. 

In the loss, Neumann led the way with six kills, while Moore had four kills and an ace.

The Lady Bulldogs are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Montreat (N.C.) for an AAC match. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
