LEBANON, Tenn. - The Union College men's soccer team and Cumberland (Tenn.) battled to a 2-2, overtime draw on Wednesday in NAIA action. The match was called after the first overtime period due to darkness.
With the tie, Union went to 2-7-1 overall, while Cumberland went to 1-7-1 overall with the result.
After a scoreless first half, Union finally cracked the scoreboard in the 46th minute, as Alfie Caruso put a shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0. TJ Speckman recorded an assist on the play, on a goal that was Caruso's first of the season.
UC kept the lead for the next 33 minutes of regulation, until Cumberland's Luke Wilson scored the equalizer in the 79th minute to make it 1-1.
In the 83rd minute, Union took the lead back at 2-1, as Dawson Marcum scored unassisted. The goal was the second of the season for Marcum. Cumberland, however, answered right back just 52 seconds later, as Marconi Neto scored the game-tying goal, unassisted.
After 90 minutes of tied play, the match that moved into one, 15 minute overtime period. Union took three shots in the period, one of which was on goal. They could not, however, get a shot past Cumberland goalie Ian Hamilton, as the match was called after the period, ending in a draw.
Overall, Union outshot Cumberland 22-14 in the contest, and held a 10-4 edge on corner kicks. Union goalie Juan Gallegos started in net for the Bulldogs, and made a save in 105 minutes of play.
