BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union volleyball team snapped its two-game winless streak with a 3-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Point (Ga.) Tuesday as Christa Hicks and Paige Moore each hammered home 11 kills apiece.
Union took the match in relative easy fashion, winning 25-12, 25-13, 25-15.
The win improves the Lady Bulldogs' record to 9-12 overall and 5-3 in the AAC, while Point falls to 3-10 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Hicks registered a .647 hitting percentage as she delivered 11 kills in 17 attempts with no errors. She also notched two total blocks. Moore had a .381 hitting percentage (11 kills and three errors in 21 attempts) to go along with three total blocks. Caity Merritt had a solid game with nine kills and three blocks, while Brooke Porter recorded five kills and 13 digs.
Early on in the first set, the scoring went back and forth. But Union used a 7-1 run to open up a 13-6 lead. Up 18-11, the Lady Bulldogs scored seven of the final eight points to win the frame 25-12.
Point to a quick 3-1 lead to start the second set, but Union reeled off a 13-2 run for a 14-5 advantage as the Lady Bulldogs cruised to the 25-13 set win. Merritt had four kills in the set with Porter adding three.
Play was tight in the the third set until the Lady Bulldogs closed out the match strong. Up 19-15, Union scored the match's final six points for the 25-15 set win and 3-0 sweep. Moore recorded five kills in the frame.
Union returns to action Friday when it plays at Columbia (S.C.) in another AAC contest. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
