WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Union College men's and women's swimming teams put up some impressive individual performances on the afternoon, but were unable as a team to best Cumberlands (Ky.) in a dual meet on Saturday.
Overall, Cumberlands won the meet by a combined score of 225-140, with the men's team edging out the Bulldogs 105-100, and the women's squad besting the Lady Bulldogs 120-40. Despite that, Union registered 16 NAIA National Qualifying Cuts, while the men's team won seven of the 11 events they swam in.
"It was a very competitive meet," said head coach Rafael Forti. "I'm proud of the way we performed today. Despite of all issues we had to set-up our lineup for this meet, we have still managed to keep things very interesting all day long.
"Performances like today's assure me of how strong we will be once we have everyone available, and that we are headed into the right direction with our training."
On the men's side, the Bulldogs achieved 10 national qualifying cuts. Leading off on the day was the 200-medley relay team, who hit the wall in 1:38.38 to win the event, and notch an "A" cut in the process. The Bulldogs 400-free relay team also had an "A" cut, with a time of 3:17.89.
Individually, the lone "A" cut on the day for the Bulldogs was recorded by Yan Rocha, who won the 200-free with a time of 1:46.70. Rocha also had a "B" cut with his lead-off time in the 100-free, as well. Meanwhile. two "B" cuts were notched by Jeffrey Snider, who won the 50-free in 22.47, and the 100-free in 49.94.
Other top performances on the day for the Bulldogs included Travis Strachan's "B" cut time in the 100-fly (54.11), Martino Cervera's "B" cut mark in the 500-free (4:55.22) which was good enough to win the event, and Vinicius Rossi's winning time in the 100-breast, (1:01.62, a "B" cut). Luis Ambrosio placed right behind Rossi in the event, and also recorded a "B" cut with a mark of 1:02.21.
On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs achieved "A" cuts in both relay events, finishing the 200-medley relay in 1:58.11, and the 400-free relay in 3:58.34.
Individually, Renata Cabral recorded "A" cuts in two events, the 200-free (2:02.88) and 100-free (54.39), winning the event with her time. She also notched a "B" cut in the 50-free, recording it on a split of the 100-free. The final cut of the afternoon was recorded by Lexus Thompson, who had a "B" cut in the 100-back with a mark of 1:03.95.
The Union College swimming teams return to action on Oct. 20 when they travel to Berea (Ky.) for a meet against BC and St. Catharine (Ky.).
