Women's Soccer - Wed, Oct. 10, 2012

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Georgetown's (Ky.) Becca Dietrich scored the game-winner in the 84th minute, propelling the Lady Tigers to a 1-0 victory over the Union College women's soccer team on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, Union fell to 7-4-1 overall on the year, while Georgetown improved to 7-3 with the win.

In the first half, both Union and Georgetown had several opportunities on net, only to get turned away by both squads' goalkeepers.

For Union, it was Stephanie Burton, who made three saves in the first 45 minutes, while for Georgetown, the combination of Kelsey Givens and Lauren Leick stopped five shots in the period. With the dominating performances in net for both teams, the game remained scoreless throughout the first 45 minutes, and into the locker room for intermission.

In the second half, Georgetown turned up the intensity on offense, taking 14 total shots in the period. Burton, however, failed to relent, stopping shot after shot to keep Georgetown off the scoreboard.

Things finally came to a pass with about six minutes left, as Georgetown lined up for a corner kick. When the kick entered the box, the ball was bounced around off of several players. Eventually, Dietrich found control, and fired a shot past Burton for the eventual game-winner.

Union had one last chance very late, as Georgetown committed a foul with three seconds left. This gave UC forward Sofie Jorgensen one final shot on net as the horn sounded, but Givens made her final save of the night on the shot, preserving the win for GC.

Overall, Georgetown outshot UC in the match, 21-15, and held a 10-1 edge on corner kicks. Burton was dazzling all night in net, making 11 total saves, eight of which came in the second half. The 11 save night for Burton was a season best. In the shot category for UC, Aline Dalmedico took the most on the evening for Union with seven (two on goal).

The Lady Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Montreat (N.C.) for a key AAC match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
