MONTREAT, N.C. - A goal by Montreat (N.C.) early into the second overtime period lifted the Cavaliers to a 2-1 victory over the Union College men's soccer team on Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 3-8-1 overall, 1-5 in the AAC, while Montreat improved to 3-8-1 with the win, 2-4 in the AAC.

"We played great today, I told the guys after the match we have nothing to be ashamed of," said head coach Tyler Brock. "The effort we had out of our defense today was special, especially from Alfie Caruso. He played with so much intensity all match."

In the first half, the Bulldogs were first to strike, as Hugo Sanchez scored the first goal of his Union career to make it 1-0. Joe Butcher recorded an assist on the play, his team-leading sixth of the season. From there for the rest of the half, the UC defense kept Montreat off the scoreboard, as the Bulldogs rode the one-goal lead into halftime.

To start the second half, Union's Jonathan Watson was given a red card just three minutes in, meaning that the Bulldogs would have to play short-handed for the final 42 minutes of regulation. UC, however, was still relentless on defense, and clung to the 1-0 lead as the match went into the final minutes.

Montreat finally cracked the scoreboard with a minute and four seconds left in regulation to tie things up and send it to overtime. In the overtime periods, Union had a few chances to score in the first overtime, but failed to cash in. As the match went into the second OT, Montreat won it with a goal a few minutes into the period.

The Union College men's soccer team will try to bounce back on Wednesday when they host Tennessee Wesleyan at home in another AAC tilt. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Burch/Nau Field.
