ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Union College goalkeeper Stephanie Burton has been named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Burton, a senior from Queensland, Australia, wins the award for the second time this season, as she garnered the honor back on Sept. 3.
This past week was an impressive one for Burton, as the Lady Bulldogs went 1-1 on the week to put their record overall on the year at 8-4-1. It started off Wednesday at Georgetown, where Burton was impressive in a losing effort, stopping 11 shots in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on the road.
Burton followed that performance up with another gem on Saturday at Montreat, as she shutout the Lady Cavaliers over 90 minutes of work, helping the Lady Bulldogs notch an important 2-0 conference win on the road. Burton made nine saves in between the pipes on the day for Union, in a victory that pushed the Lady Bulldogs into a three-way tie for first in the AAC standings.
For the year, Burton has made 66 saves, and recorded a goals against average of 1.71. The shutout win over Montreat was her fourth of the year, as well.
Burton and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, hosting Tennessee Wesleyan in another critical AAC match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Burch/Nau Field.
