BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Tennessee Wesleyan's Abigail Fannin scored twice, leading TWC to a 3-1 victory over the Union College women's soccer team on Wednesday in Appalachian Athletic Conference action at Burch/Nau Field.
With the loss, Union fell to 8-5-1 overall, 5-2-1 in the AAC, while Tennessee Wesleyan improved to 9-6, 7-2 in the AAC with the win.
Tennessee Wesleyan was first to strike in the eighth minute, as Madelyn Thomas scored off a cross from Fannin from 10 yards out to make it 1-0. Fannin added her first goal in the 30th minute, on a shot from 25 yards out that was deflected into the net off a Union defender.
Fannin's score made it 2-0, a lead TWC rode into intermission. In the half, TWC controlled things, outshooting Union 8-4 overall.
Union made things interesting right off the bat to start the second half, as Hayley Fox
scored on a Sofie Jorgensen
assist in the 47th minute to cut the TWC lead in half at 2-1. The goal for Fox was her second of the year, while Jorgensen notched her fifth assist.
Tennessee Wesleyan, however, came right back, with Fannin scoring her second goal in the 59th minute to put TWC back up by two goals. The lead proved to be much for Union to come back from over the final 30 minutes, as TWC notched a big road conference win.
Overall, TWC ended the match holding a 14-8 advantage on shots, and a 7-2 edge on corner kicks. Goalie Stephanie Burton
kept Union in the contest all afternoon, making five total saves.
UC returns to action on Saturday, traveling to St. Andrews (N.C.) for their final AAC match of the 2012 regular season. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
