BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's soccer team and Tennessee Wesleyan battled for 110 minutes, but the AAC match ended after two overtime periods in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday at Burch/Nau Field.
With the result, Union went to 3-8-2 overall on the year, 1-5-1 in the AAC, while TWC is now 8-3-3, 5-1-1 in the AAC with the tie.
At the half, the match was scoreless after Union goalie Juan Gallegos posted an impressive first period. In all, Gallegos made four saves, as TWC had a big edge in shots in the first 45 minutes, outshooting UC 12-3.
To start the second half, TWC finally cashed in on an opportunity, as Danny Smith scored in the 47th minute to give the visiting Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Smith headed in his goal on a free kick.
About eight minutes later, Union scored the equalizer, as Alfie Caruso knocked a shot into the back of the net on a header in front of the box in the 55th minute. The goal was set up by a Joe Butcher corner, and knotted the match up at one-goal apiece.
From there in regulation, both teams just missed on opportunities to score the eventual game-winner. UC's best two chances came with five minutes left, but both Dawson Marcum and Coy Taylor just missed on scoring opportunities in front of the net.
With that, the match went into two 10-minute overtime periods. In the first OT, both teams took just one shot each, with each falling wide of the net. In the second and final overtime period, both Gallegos and TWC goalie Clark Lydon made saves to preserve the tie. Union had one last chance late, but a desperation shot by Taylor went high of the net, as the match ended in a draw.
Overall, TWC outshot Union 21-11 in the contest, and held an 11-3 edge on corner kicks. Caruso's goal was his second of the year, with Butcher collecting his sixth assist. In net, Gallegos had a strong day, making eight total saves in 110 minutes of work. TWC's Lydon was just as impressive, ending the afternoon with three saves.
