LAURINBURG, N.C - Union College forward Helen Weber scored two first half goals, pacing the Lady Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory at St. Andrews (N.C.) in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
With the win, Union went to 9-5-1 on the year, and finish the AAC regular season with a 6-2-1 record. St. Andrews fell to 3-7-2 with the loss, 1-5-1 in the AAC.
All three goals scored in the match came in the first period, with St. Andrews getting on the board first on a score by Hayley Peck in the 16th minute to give them an early 1-0 lead.
Weber scored her first goal in the 31st minute unassisted to tie the match up at one, then scored the game winner 1:43 seconds later. Weber's second goal was assisted by Sofie Jorgensen, and gave the Lady Bulldogs the one-score lead going into intermission.
In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs held the lead over the final 45 minutes due to a strong defensive effort. In all, Union held St. Andrews to just four total shots in the second period (no shots on goal), as they hung on to record the road AAC win.
Overall, Union outshot St. Andrews 19-12, while St. Andrews had a 5-3 edge on corner kicks. In net, Union goalie Stephanie Burton made three saves on the afternoon. For Weber, her two-score outing increased her goal total on the year to 10.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the pitch on Wednesday, hosting Midway (Ky.) in the squads regular season finale. It is also the programs annual Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
