BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's soccer team scored three times in the first half, on their way to a 4-2 victory over Berea (Ky.) at Bulldog Field on Saturday. The contest was UC's annual homecoming match.
With the win, Union moved to 6-8-2 overall, while Berea fell to 4-10 with the loss.
In the first period, Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Jonathan Watson and Jamie Cozens scored back-to-back goals in the 17th and 33rd minutes, respectively. Wason's goal was assisted by Joe Butcher, who served the ball up to him in the box on a corner kick, while Cozens' score was unassisted. It was also his first of the 2012 season.
UC's last goal in the first half came in the 38th minute, as Jacob Dukes scored off another Butcher assist. With that, the Bulldogs went into the half up 3-0 over the Mountaineers.The goal was the second of the year for Dukes.
To start the second half, Berea got on the scoreboard, as Josh Wedding scored unassisted to cut the UC lead down to 3-1. In the 62nd minute, the Bulldogs put the match away, as Waston scored his second goal of the day off a Dukes assist, giving UC a 4-1 lead. Watson's goal was his team-leading 10th of the season.
Berea added the final score of the evening in the 75th minute, but it was too little, too late, as the Bulldogs pulled out a homecoming victory.
Overall, Union controlled the stat sheet, outshooting Berea 24-7 in the contest, while having the edge on corner kicks, 8-3.
The Union College men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, when they host Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) in the squad's regular season finale. Kickoff at Burch/Nau Field is set for 2 p.m.
