CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Union women's golf team is in eighth place following the opening round of play at the Lee (Tenn.) University Invitational on Monday.
The tournament is being played at the Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tenn.
Union posted a 373 during the tournament's first 18 holes to put in eighth place, six strokes back of seventh-place SCAD-Atlanta which had a 367.
Host Lee leads the way with a 327, which is 20 strokes better than second-place USC-Beaufort which carded a 347. Coastal Georgia is third with a 350, while Cumberlands (Ky.) and Thomas (Ga.) are fourth and fifth at 354 and 364, respectively.
Tennessee Wesleyan is sixth at 366 with SCAD-Atlanta, Union, Bryan (Tenn.) (375) and Georgetown (Ky.) (379) rounding out the top 10. Warner (Fla.) completes with 11-team field as it registered a 393.
Individually, Sydney Smith leads Union with a 92 with Brittany Zins and Katie Nusz right behind at 93. Ashley Buxton fired a 95, and Danielle Judd rounded things out with a 98.
Bryan's Carrilee Hiers leads the field with a five-over 77. Four others are tied for second at 81.
The second round will get under Tuesday morning.
