ATHENS, Tenn. - Third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan scored two goals in the first half, on their way to a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded Union College in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Appalachian Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday.
With the loss, Union is eliminated from the tournament and will end their 2012 season with a 7-9-2 record. Tennessee Wesleyan improved to 12-3-3 with the win, and move on to next week's semifinals.
In the first half, TWC dominated play, scoring goals 22nd and 43rd minutes to take a 2-0 lead at the half. Overall in the period, TWC outshot Union 12-1.
In the second half, TWC put the match away a few minutes in, scoring their third goal of the afternoon in the 49th minute to go up three scores. Union finally got on the scoreboard in the 88th minute, as Jamie Cozens scored his second goal of the year. However, the goal came a little too late for Union, as TWC rolled to a two-score win at home.
Overall in the contest, TWC outshot Union 23-8, and held a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks. In goal, UC goalie Juan Gallegos kept Union in it with nine saves on the afternoon.
