MONTREAT, N.C. - An goal in the 56th minute by Lauren Cantin for top-seeded Montreat (N.C.) was the difference, as the Lady Cavaliers upended the fourth-seeded Union College women's soccer team, 2-1, in the semifinals of the 2012 Appalachian Athletic Tournament on Friday.

With the victory, Montreat moved to 12-3-5 on the year, and advanced to tommorow's AAC Tournament Championship Match against second-seeded Tennessee Weslyean, who bested third-seed Milligan earlier in the day, 3-1. With the loss, UC will end their 2012 season with an 11-6-1 overall mark.

In the first half, Montreat got on the scoreboard first, as Chole McCleary-Small scored a goal in the 18th minute, giving MC the early an early 1-0 lead. The Lady Cavaliers then kept the lead for the next 27 minutes, and into the half, leading by a goal over the Lady Bulldogs at intermission despite the fact that UC held a 7-6 shot advantage.

As the match went into the second half, Union tied the match, as Aline Dalmedico scored off a Sofie Jorgensen assist in the 56th minute. The equalizer was Dalmedico's 12th goal of the season. But, Montreat came right back 31 seconds later, with Cantin scoring the eventual game-winner. From there, the Lady Cavaliers kept Union off the scoreboard, in part due to a great performance by goalie Caroline Mellard, who ended the afternoon with 10 saves.

Overall, Union ended the match outshooting Montreat 19-14, while Montreat held a 6-2 edge on corner kicks. In net for Union, Stephanie Burton had a great game in a losing effort, making eight total saves in 90 minutes of work.

This afternoon's heartbreaker for the Lady Bulldogs marks the second straight year they have bowed out in the AAC Tournament in the semifinals to the top-seed. Last year, UC fell to eventual tournament champ Reinhardt (Ga.) by a same 2-1 score.
