LEXINGTON, Ky. - It was another strong day for both the Union College men's and women's swimming teams Saturday at Transylvania (Ky.), where they took part in a dual meet against the host Pioneers.
Overall, the UC men's team beat Transy 145-43, while the women's team fell to the hosts 121.5-60.5.
Also on the day, UC hit 16 NAIA National Qualifying Cuts (five "A" cuts and 11 "B" cuts). Two of note were obtained for the first time on the year. For the women, Renata Cabral recorded a "B" cut in the 500-free, hitting the wall in 5:32.05 to win the event. On the men's side of the event, Yan Rocha continued his strong season, also obtaining a "B" cut with a winning time of 4:58.79.
"It was an interesting meet, with two distinctive moments to it," said head coach Rafael Forti. "First, we weren't looking very sharp until the first diving intermission, even though we were still being competitive. After the first diving event, we looked much better, and things started to look good in most aspects of our swims.
"Everyone is extremely tired at this point. We can't wait for the next two weeks of training to get some of our "breath" back and head into our winter invitational meet looking to obtain the last qualifying marks. We're looking to improve our seed times, as well."
The Union College swimming teams return to action on November 30, when they host the annual Union College Winter Invitational at the Stivers Aquatic Center. The event begins on the 30th, and will extend into December 1st.
