BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Milligan's (Tenn.) Torian Sitton scored a game-high 27 points, leading the Buffaloes to an 81-56 victory over the Union College men's basketball team on Thursday evening at Robsion Arena in an Appalachian Athletic Conference affair.
With the loss, Union fell to 8-9 overall on the year, 2-4 in the AAC, while Milligan improved to 12-6, and 5-1 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first half, it was a neck and neck ballgame throughout, as things were tied up on five separate occasions. The biggest lead by either team in the first period was just five points, which the Bulldogs hit with 8:23 left (26-21) after Tarik Smith nailed a three-pointer.
To end the first half, Milligan made one of two free throws to take a 33-32 lead, and road that advantage into the locker room at intermission.
It was a different story in the second half, however, as Milligan controlled the last 20 minutes of regulation right from the start.
The Buffaloes opened the half on a 13-4 run to extend their lead out to double-digits at 46-36 with 13 minutes left. From there, they never let up, as the Bulldogs continued to struggle on the offensive end the entire period. When all was said and done, Milligan outscored Union 48-24 in the second half, on their way to a big road conference win.
Overall, Smith led all UC scorers with 22 points, while Deante Johnson scored 12 points and snagged 10 rebounds to record his third double-double in four games.
Milligan was led by Sitton, who got to his 27 point total on 11-of-14 shooting from the floor. In the second half, Milligan was dominant, shooting 56 percent from the floor, compared to a 29 percent clip by the Bulldogs.
Union returns to action on Wednesday, hitting the road to take on Point (Ga.) in another AAC tilt. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
