BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's and women's swimming teams opened up 2013 in impressive fashion on Saturday, sweeping past both Bethel (Tenn.) and West Virginia Tech in a meet held at the Stivers Aquatic Center. 

For the men, the Bulldogs cruised past Bethel, 86-7 and West Virginia Tech, 82-13, while the women's team bested Bethel, 45-36, and West Virginia Tech, 47-6. 

In all, the teams combined to hit 13 NAIA National Qualifying Cuts on the day, five of which were "A" cuts.

"I was looking forward to see how we would swim after the Christmas break," said head coach Rafael Forti.  "We came off some excellent  winter invitational results, so naturally I was curious to see how we would perform. To me, it was positive, and I am looking forward to what comes next for us."

Of the 13 National Qualifying cuts achieved on the day, three of which were set for the first time on the season. For the men, Martino Cervera posted "B" cuts in both the 50-free (22.62) and the 100-free (49.09), while on the women's side, Kasey McCormick hit a "B" cut in the 100-breast (1:12.92).

For the men, Yan Rocha won two event on the day, winning both the 1000-free (11:28.82) and 500-free (5:08.43), while Travis Strachan was also a two-time winner, taking the 200-free (1:51.69) and 100-free (47.87). Meanwhile for the women, McCormick won two events in the 100-breast and 1000-free (13:17.46), and Tanya Eustrom did the same, taking the 100-free (57.67) and 200-free (2:18.14).

Rounding things out was relay events, where the men's team won both the 200-free relay (1:29.65) and the 200-medley relay (1:49.88), with the women's team posting a win in the 200-free relay (1:48.19).

The Union College men's and women's swimming teams return to action on Friday, traveling to Milligan (Tenn.) for a meet against the host Buffaloes and Lindsey Wilson. Things get underway at 6 p.m.
