Men's Basketball - Sat, Feb. 2, 2013

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College forward Archie Adams scored a game-high 21 points, leading the Bulldogs to a 72-50 victory over Virginia Intermont in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday evening at Robsion Arena.

With the win, Union moved to 11-13 overall, 5-8 in the AAC, while VI fell to 12-12, 6-6 in the AAC with the defeat.

In the first half, Union came out and excelled on both ends of the floor from the start, opening up a quick 10-0 lead five minutes into the game, capped by a Tyrell Hall three. The pace set by the Bulldogs early continued through the rest of the period, as the closest VI got to the UC lead the rest of the half was seven points (23-16).

At intermission, the Bulldogs led by 12 at 32-20, as UC held VI to just 21 percent shooting from the floor in the period (7-of-33) and forced seven turnovers (Union made just three turnovers in the half).

In the second half, it was more of the same, as Union opened up a 38-20 lead three minutes into the half, going on a 8-2 run to start the period. Union eventually extended the lead out to an insurmountable 25 points (51-26) with 13 minutes left, and never looked back the rest of the night. The Bulldogs coasted down the stretch (the closest VI got to the lead was 17 points at 58-41), on their way to notching a big home AAC win.

Overall, Adams led the way for Union with his 21 point night on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor. Adams also snatched seven rebounds, blocked four shots (matching a season high), and recorded three assists.

Other leaders on the night for UC included Tarik Smith, who came off the bench to score 13 points, and Tyler Wagner, who added 12 points.

VI was led in the loss by JD Tucker, who scored 16 points. Overall, the Cobras were held to just 28 percent shooting from the floor on the night by a relentless UC defense.

The Union men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Milligan (Tenn.) for another AAC tilt. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
