BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's and women's swimming teams are ready for the 2013 NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships, which begin Wednesday at Oklahoma City Community College in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldog will look to improve on historic finishes a season ago at the NAIA Championships, with both teams finishing seventh overall. Also, the program produced its first National Champion in a swimming event, as Renata Cabral captured the 100-free.
However, Cabral has moved on from the program through graduation, but both programs look to contend all week, and enter the championships in top five positions in several individual and team relay events.
"We're looking forward to getting out to Nationals," said head coach Rafael Forti. "Everyone is healthy, has trained really well all season long, and we are bringing competitive squads to face the nation's best."
In all, 13 Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will compete in several events at Nationals, with all 10 relay teams also competing.
For the men, Luis Ambrosio (100 and 200-breast, 200-fly), Martino Cervera (500 and 200-free, 200-back), Yan Rocha (500, 200, and 100-free), and Travis Strachan (50 and 100-free, 100-fly) all qualified for three events. Meanwhile, Cameron Brewer (100 and 200-back), Louis Glavinos Jr. (100 and 200-back), Vinicius Rossi (100 and 200-breast) and Jeffrey Snider (50 and 100-free) will all compete in two events.
In seeding, Rossi leads the Bulldogs into the Championships, as he will be the number one seed in the 100-breast. Cervera will be the second seed in the 500-free, while Ambrosio is also second in the 200-breast, and sixth in the 100-breast. Strachan rounds out the top six seeded athletes in an event for the men, as he is the sixth seed in the 100-fly.
In relays, the Bulldogs have two teams seeded second overall in the 800-free and 400-free relay squads. UC is the third seed in two other relays - the 400-medley and 200-medley relays - and round out the relay group with a fifth seed in the 200-free relay.
For the women's team, Tanya Eustrom (50, 100, and 200-free), Lexus Thompson (100 and 200-back, 200-IM), Kasey McCormick (100 and 200-breast, 200-IM), and Kayla Yokley (50, 100, and 200-free) will all take part in three events. Anna Kotliarova rounds out the list, as she will take part in the 100 and 200-free.
In seeding, McCormick is a top ten seed in two events, starting seventh in the 200-breast and 10th in the 100-breast. Each Lady Bulldog relay team is also seeded in the top ten, paced by the sixth seeded 400-free relay squad.
