BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union baseball team recorded its second and third wins in a row with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Holy Cross on Wednesday, winning by the scores of 7-1 and 17-0
With the victories, the Bulldogs improve to 13-9 overall, while the Saints fall to 5-8 with their fourth and fifth losses in a row.
The Union pitching staff did a good job on the day, allowing one earned run on eight hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts in the two games combined.
Offensively, Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) continues to carry a hot bat as he went 5-for-7 with a double and two RBIs on the day. The Bulldog catcher has gone 10-for-15 with seven RBIs to up his average to .333 on the season.
Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) drove in four runs on the day.
Turning Point - Game 1
Once Union begin scoring in the second inning, the game seemed pretty much in hand. The Bulldogs got on the board in the second thanks to a LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.) two-run single.
After Holy Cross scratched out a run in the top of the third, Union score twice more in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 advantage. Dillman lined a RBI double, and Tyler Young (Manchester, Ky.) drove in a run with a sac fly to give the Bulldogs the three-run lead.
Union scored once in the fifth and twice more in the sixth to make the final 7-1.
Anderson finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Trey Alexander (Glasgow, Ky.) picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-0. He last four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Andrew Salazar suffered the loss, dropping him to 1-2 on the season.
Turning Point - Game 2
Union took all doubt into who would win the finale as it posted six runs in the bottom of the first en route to the 17-0 victory.
The Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate, pushing six across for the early advantage. After back-to-back walks to start the rally, Brake lined a two-run single to begin the outburst. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, Jackson Arnett (Tompkinsville, Ky.) roped a two-run single to make it a 4-0 contest. Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) and Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.) each drove in a run to complete the inning, giving Union the six-run cushion.
It remained a 6-0 game until the fourth when Union tacked on three more runs. The Bulldogs scored five in the fifth and three in the sixth to complete the 17-0 blanking.
Making his eighth start of the season, Arnett came up big in going 3-for-4 with six RBIs - the most by a Bulldog this season. Colby Lawson (Whitley City, Ky.) came off the bench to go 1-for-1 with three RBIs and run scored, and Brake finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Vance Sullivan (Verona, Ky.) collected the win, allowing no runs on three hits and no walks with two strikeouts in four innings or work. He is now 3-2 on the season. Alex Erwin was tagged with the loss for Holy Cross, dropping him to 0-1.

Union returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference play as it travels to Montreat (N.C.) for a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday with a nine-inning contest set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
