WEST POINT, Ga. - The Union College softball team dropped a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference games at Point (Ga.) on Saturday. The host Skyhawks won game one, 2-0, then completed the sweep with a 14-1 victory over the Lady Bulldogs in game two (in five innings).
With the losses, UC dropped to 7-9 overall, 2-4 in the AAC, while Point improved to 11-11, 4-2 in the league with the pair of victories.
In the first game, it was a pitchers duel for the first three innings between UC's Katie Perkins and Point's Jordan Edge, as both tossed three scoreless innings. But, in the bottom of the fourth, Point finally broke through for a run to make it 1-0. The Skyhawks added another run in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead out to two runs.
The two-run lead was enough for Edge to work with the rest of the contest, as she recorded the shutout, six-hit victory (6-6). Perkins (5-3) collected the loss. At the plate, Cameron Campbell was the only UC player to have multiple hits in game one, going 2-for-3.
In the second game, Point scored early and often on their way to a big 13-run win in five innings. Up 7-0 after two innings, the Skyhawks put the game away in the third, exploding for seven runs to go up by 13 over the Lady Bulldogs after UC scored their lone run of the contest in the top half of the inning.
Overall, Point's Jessica Hart (5-5) scattered just three hits in five innings of work to earn the win in the pitching circle. For Union, starter Rachel Cogdill (0-1) was the loser.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when they host NCAA Division II member Minnesota, Crookston in a doubleheader at Union Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
