BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College softball team fell in two games to Virginia Intermont on Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference action at Union Field. The Lady Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker in game one, 3-2, then lost game two, 13-4, in five innings to the visiting Lady Cobras.
With the pair of losses, UC fell to 10-14 overall, 2-6 in the AAC, while VI improved to 21-5, 7-1 in the AAC with the victories.
In game one, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind VI 2-0 after three innings, but rallied back to tie the game in the fifth after scoring single runs in two straight innings. In the fifth, Danielle Borum had the game-tying hit, an RBI single up the middle that scored Ashley Wojnowski.
The game remained tied at two entering the seventh inning, where VI's Samantha Perry-Shifflet came up clutch, hitting an RBI single with two outs to give the Lady Cobras a one-run lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, UC tried to rally, as Wojnowski led off with an infield single. But, she was stranded at second base, as the game ended after Cameron Campbell had a hard line drive caught in center field for the third out.
Overall, Borum and Campbell each went 2-for-4 to lead the Lady Bulldogs, with Borum picking up an RBI. Both also had doubles in the contest, as well. In the circle, Katie Perkins (7-6) was the hard-luck loser, striking out six, while allowing just two earned runs in the contest. VI's Micalah Sacre (7-1) earned the win, striking out 13 in a complete game victory.
Game One - Turning Point
With the game tied and with runners on first and second with two outs, VI catcher Samantha Perry-Shifflet came to the plate. She came through for the Lady Cobras, knocking home her sister Megan from second base on an RBI, game-winning single into shallow left field.
In game two, VI came out and put things away early, exploding for 15 hits in a convincing nine-run victory in five innings.
The Lady Cobras opened a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings, and never looked back. UC did cut the lead to 8-4 entering the fifth after Borum hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, but VI put UC away in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs to record the big win.
Overall, Borum continued her solid day at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and three-RBI on her home run in the fourth. In the circle, Gianna Schauer (3-7) was the loser for UC, while VI's Rachel Watts (8-0) picked up the victory.
By the Numbers
• Borum completed a very big week at the plate in today's doubleheader. In all, the freshman had eight hits, two home runs, a double, a triple, and nine RBI. Her home run in game two was the third of her season, which is now the team-lead.
• Campbell had three multiple-hits games on the week, and now has seven on the 2013 season.
• Wojnowski scored a run in every game on the week (nine), and has at least one hit in five of the last six games.
The Lady Bulldogs host AAC-foe Milligan (Tenn.) in a conference doubleheader at Union Field on Friday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
