KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Freshman Danielle Borum recorded four RBI, pacing the eighth-seeded Union College softball team to a 10-3 victory over ninth-seed St. Andrews (N.C.) on Monday afternoon at Domtar Park. The contest was a play-in game in the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament.
With the win, UC went to 13-28 on the year, and move on to play top-seeded and No. 8 Reinhardt (Ga.) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. St. Andrews saw their season come to an end with the loss, and end the season with a 15-29 record.
In the second, St. Andrews was first to strike, scoring two runs off of UC starter Katie Perkins to take an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Union cracked the scoreboard, as Borum hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to tie the game up at 2-all. The round tripper, which scored Ashley Wojnowski, was her fifth home run of the season.
Over the next few innings, Union would put the game away, scoring at least a run in three consecutive innings. In the fourth, UC scored three runs to break the tie and go up 5-2, when Rachel Cogdill had an RBI single, and Borum added to her RBI total with a two-RBI single up the middle with two outs.
After St, Andrews scored a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead down to 5-3, UC roared back in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs to go up 7-3. Autumn Greenwell hit an RBI double in the frame, while Alissa Hampton had an RBI infield single.
In the bottom of the sixth, Union put St. Andrews away with three more runs to go up seven. Greenwell capped off a strong day at the plate with a two-RBI double to left center with two outs to put the Lady Bulldogs up seven. In the seventh, St. Andrews went down in order, as the Bulldogs recorded the convincing win.
Overall, Borum led the way for Union, going 2-for-3 with four RBI (a season best), and a home run. Borum also scored twice in the win, as well. Meanwhile, Greenwell was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Campbell was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored. In all, the Lady Bulldogs smacked 13 hits in the contest.
In the circle, Perkins (8-10) earned the complete game win, allowing just three runs (two earned) and seven hits. For St. Andrews, starter Jessica Wiegers (5-9) was the loser, allowing seven runs in five innings of work.
St. Andrews was led at the plate in the loss by Mary Cross, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
