
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – In another hard-fought Appalachian Athletic Conference contest, the Union College Bulldogs survived for an 83-80 decision over the visitors from UVa-Wise Tuesday evening.
The game was tied 73 apiece with 2:39 left on the clock and Aaron Dunaway (Lexington, Ky.) scored two of his game-high 19 points to give Union the lead for good. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight points over the next minute and a half. UVa-Wise fought back to make the Union lead two points. A free throw from Dunaway pushed the lead to 83-80 with 13 seconds left. UVa-Wise was unable to convert and the Bulldogs picked up the conference victory.
Union trailed for the first four minutes of the game. UVa-Wise led by as many as five points, 7-2. The Bulldogs used a 3-point play from Brian Kirk (Augusta, Ky.) to go in front 11-10. The Cavs of UVa-Wise regained the lead with a 3-pointer from Eric Swords.
The Bulldogs took control and built a 13-point lead, 42-29. A 3-point basket from Seth Gibson closed the half for the Cavs and made the score 42-32 at the break.
The Cavs opened the second half with a 15-5 spurt to make it a game. Bryan Sexton scored six of his team-high 18 points during the run.
Chris Stunson (Richmond, Ky.) scored 13 points and Kevin Jones (Radcliff, Ky.) added 11 points for the Bulldogs. James Johnson (Lexington, Ky.) was one rebound away from a double double, 10 points and nine rebounds. Kirk finished the game with 10 points.
Adam Hood and Swords scored 13 and 11 points, respectively for UVa-Wise.
With 10 offensive rebounds, Union scored 15 second-effort points. In comparison UVa-Wise scored six second-chance points on eight offensive rebounds. The Cavs scored half of their 80 points off the bench. Union could only muster 27 bench points. The Bulldogs scored 32 points in the paint.
The Bulldogs improved to 14-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play. The win also pushed the Bulldogs' current winning streak to three games and the Bulldogs have won two in a row at home. UVa-Wise moved to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in the AAC.
Union will pay King (Tenn.) College a visit for an AAC game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. King won the earlier contest 67-45 on Nov. 27 inside Robsion Arena.
