BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College men's swimming head coach Rafael Forti has announced that Jose Jesus Morales, a native of Madrid, Spain, has signed his National Letter of Intent and will join the Bulldog program this Fall.
Morales, who prepped at Instituto Montserrat and clubbed with Real Canoe Natación Club in his native country, plans to primarily swim IM and Fly events for the Bulldogs in the Fall, but looks to swim a variety of events for Union, as well. In Spain, Morales finished second in the 200-fly at the Spanish National Championships, and made the finals in the 100-fly, 200-IM, and 400-IM in the same meet
"We are happy to be able to land a swimmer of Jose Jesus' caliber at Union College for this coming season," said Forti. "He is a very strong swimmer, who is able to swim all strokes well. He will contribute immediately, as he possesses a great butterfly stroke in all of its distances.
"I can see him being able to swim several events competitively during the season and this will help us assess which events will be best for him to be entered in our post-season meets. He comes from a traditional club and has been exposed to good coaching, which will help him a lot in making the transition from long-course meters to short-course yards."
Morales, the son of Maria del Mar Morales Hernández, plans to major in international business at Union College. The Bulldogs open their 2013-14 season on Oct. 19, hosting Cumberlands (Ky.) and St. Catharine (Ky.) at the Stivers Aquatic Center.
