
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Union College Bulldogs made their presence known Friday on the opening day of events at the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana University. Three national marks were reached as well by a Bulldog duo.
Johnnie Nabors (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Andre Thornton (Loganville, Ga.) qualified for Saturday’s 60-meter dash finals with times of 6.90 seconds and 6.92 seconds, respectively. The times are also NAIA National Championship “A” qualifying standards. The 60-meter dash final is set for 12:10 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
Thornton added a NAIA “B” qualifying mark in the 400-meter dash. He covered two laps in 49.81 seconds.
Erick Coleman (Chicago, Ill.) and Nabors also competed in the 400 meters. Coleman posted a time of 52.48 seconds while Nabors was right behind him with a 52.52
Senior Brandon Kibert (Tazewell, Tenn.) ran the 3,000 meters and mile on Friday. His time in the 3,000 meters was nine minutes and 10.83 seconds while the mile time was 4:47.02.
Daniel Kual (Stone Mountain, Ga.) was the fastest Bulldog in the mile with a 4:42.02. Brennan O’Quinn (Meadowview, Va.) raced in the event as well and crossed the finish line at the 4:58.26 mark.
A pair of Bulldogs, Scotty Barnes (Ewing, Va.) and Cody Miller (Middlesboro, Ky.), are in the heptathlon as well.
First for the duo was the 60-meter dash and Barnes won his section with a time of 7.23 seconds while Miller followed with a 7.65 second time. The second event was the long jump and Miller jumped 5.29 meters, just in front of Barnes’ jump of 5.26 meters.
Next was the shot put and Barnes threw the shot 11.04 meters while Barnes’ best throw went 8.79 meters. The last event of the day was the high jump in which Barnes’ best jump was over 1.65 meters. Miller did not post a jump high enough.
Through the first four events Barnes has 2,287 points and Miller has amassed 1,507 points. The heptathlon’s last three events are the 60-meters hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run Saturday.
Action concludes Saturday with events throughout the day inside Gladstein Fieldhouse.
