BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Joel Childs has been named Union's new head track & field and cross country coach, Director of Athletics Tim Curry recently announced.
"We are excited to have Joel join our coaching staff," said Curry. "Although this is first head coaching job, he comes to Union with a lot of experience and a lot of good knowledge. I look forward to seeing what he will be able to do with our Bulldog and Lady Bulldog track and cross country programs in the coming years."
Childs comes to Barbourville after spending the past four years as an assistant at Huntington (Ind.) University. During his time there, the cross country program won two conference titles, has 12 all-conference runs, had two individuals and two teams qualify for the NAIA National Championship Meet. The Huntington track team had one NAIA national qualifier and seven all-conference honorees. Childs coached a total of 58 top-10 times while at Huntington.
"I'm excited for this opportunity. I can see a lot of potential in the programs here, and I can't wait to bring Union back up to where it once used to be in its running program," said Childs.
A 2008 graduate of Anderson (Ind.) University, Childs has both USTAF Level One and Level Two certification. The level two certification is with a focus on sprints, hurdles and relays. Most recently, he completed work to receive USTFCCCA Jumps Specialist certification.
As a student-athlete at Anderson, Childs was a four-year member of the cross country and track & field teams. The cross country teams twice qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships. In all, Childs was a part of seven conference team titles.
Childs first order of business will begin to develop Union's young teams.
"The teams are full of potential but raw," he said. "We need to develop the talent we have and build our numbers, and then we can compete."
Childs is married, and his wife's name is Brittany.
The Union women's track & field team placed fourth at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Meet, while the Bulldogs placed fifth.
