BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College junior forward Aline Dalmedico recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a dominating 6-1 victory over Truett-McConnell in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Burch/Nau Field.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs moved to 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the AAC, while TMC fell to 3-4, 0-1 in the AAC with the defeat.
In the first half, Union controlled play from the open. The Lady Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard in the ninth minute, as Jessica Perkins scored off a Helen Weber assist to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Union's next two goals were by Dalmedico, who converted two shots from long distance to goals. The first came in the 22nd minute, where Dalmedico fired a shot into the net from the 20-yard line, giving Union a 2-0 lead. The next came in the 30th minute, this time from even farther out (the 30-yard line), but with the same result, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 3-0 lead going into the half.
In the second half, Truett-McConnell got on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute with a goal, but Union quickly put the match out of reach with a pair of goals.
The first came from Weber in the 63rd minute, an unassisted goal that she put just over the goalkeeper's head to make it 4-1, Union. Dalmedico then completed the hat trick after converting a penalty kick a few minutes later, giving the Lady Bulldogs an insurmountable 5-1 lead.
Union scored the game's last goal in the 84th minute, as Stephanie Miller found the back of the net on a shot set up by a Sara Valenzuela free kick, giving the Lady Bulldogs a commanding five-goal win in their conference opener.
Overall, both Union and Truett-McConnell took 15 shots and two corners, each. In goal, Kendall Ellington earned the win, making four saves in over 70 minutes of work in between the pipes.
By the Numbers
- Dalmedico's hat trick was the second of her season, as the junior accomplished the feat in Union's first match of the season at Campbellsville (Ky.) on Aug. 28. She has now scored seven goals on the year, and 23 for her career (21 matches).
- Weber scored her first goal of the season in the match in the second half. The junior scored 22 goals the last two seasons, including 10 last season. All 10 of those goals came in AAC matches.
- Perkins and Miller scored their first career goals in the win. Valenzuela also notched her first career assist on the games last goal.
- Union has now won it's AAC opener two years in a row. Last year, the Lady Bulldogs bested Virginia Intermont at home, 9-0.
The Lady Bulldogs continue AAC play on Saturday, hosting Reinhardt (Ga.) at home. Things get underway at 2 p.m.
