LEBANON, Tenn. - The Union volleyball team extended its winning streak to four matches with a pair of wins at the Volleydawg Classic in Lebanon, Tenn., on Friday.
Union defeated tournament host Cumberland (Tenn.) 3-1 in its first match of the day, winning 26-28, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16. Immediately after that victory, Union swept Fisk (Tenn.) by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-13.
With the wins, Union is now 6-4 on the year.
Against Cumberland, neither team could get much of an advantage in the opening set as the largest lead at any point was three. Tied at 26-26, Cumberland scored the final two points thanks to a service error and a kill by Sheridan Jones to take the 28-26 decision.
Union was on fire in the second set, using an 11-4 stretch to open up a 20-10 cushion en route to the 25-15 set win. The third set was much like the second as Union used a 5-0 spurt to grab an 11-4 lead. From that point on, Union coasted to the 25-19 set win for a 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth set, Union continued to roll, opening up a comfortable 17-9 lead on its way to the 25-16 decision and the 3-1 match victory.
Caity Merritt led Union with 12 kills with Paige Moore adding 11. Erin Porter helped out with nine kills and three total blocks, while Brooke Hill chipped in six kills and four blocks. Ana Calaza made 25 digs, and Chandler Gray and Heather Fields recorded 23 and 17 asissts, respectively.
The loss dropped Cumberland to 8-5.
Union controlled its second match from the outset, sweeping Fisk 25-18, 25,20, 25-13. Moore led the way with nine kills with Merritt following with six.
Fisk (3-10 overall) was its own worse enemy as it committed 25 attack errors while only having 24 kills.

Union will wrap up play in the Volleydawg Classic on Saturday with two matches. Union will face Shawnee State (Ohio) at 9 a.m. CT and Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) at 11 a.m. CT.
