LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - No. 24 Georgia Gwinnett scored three unanswered goals, on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Union College men's soccer team in soggy conditions on Saturday at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
With the loss, Union fell to 3-4-1 overall on the year, while Georgia Gwinnett improved to 6-3-0 with the victory.
Union was first to strike in the contest, as freshman Alex Smith scored in the 14th minute to give the Bulldogs the early 1-0 edge. The goal was the sixth of the season for Smith (a team-high). Fellow freshman Andre Scott earned an assist on the play, his second of the year.
The lead, however, was short lived for the Bulldogs, as Georgia Gwinnett knotted things up at one on a goal by Rene Enang in the 19th minute. The Grizzlies took the lead in the 26th minute, as Rudd Grol scored to give GWC a 2-1 lead going into the half.
In the second half, Georgia Gwinnett put the match away with a goal in the 73rd minute by Enang, who second score of the game gave the Grizzlies the two-score lead. The Grizzlies then used a strong defensive effort in the second period to hold the lead, as Union took just one shot on goal the entire half (four total shots).
Overall, GWC outshot Union 12-10, and held a 9-5 edge on corner kicks.
The Bulldogs look to bounce back on Wednesday, as they travel to Berea (Ky.) for another out-of-conference match-up, Things get underway at 6 p.m.
