LAURINBURG, N.C. - The Union volleyball team received stellar performances from Paige Moore and Caity Merritt as the Lady Bulldogs posted a 3-1, Appalachian Athletic Conference win over host St. Andrews (N.C.) on Saturday.
"We won, and that's the bottom line," said Union coach Jeremy Wise of the 25-21, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20 win. "Even though it wasn't pretty, it was another conference road win. We did manage to work through more lineup changes and utilitze more of our bench this weekend. I am sure that will pay off down the road, but it would be nice to get healthy and have our starters back to continue meshing like they had been the last couple of weeks."
Moore posted a season-high 20 kills to lead Union, while Merritt hammered home 18 kills. Due to an injury to Chandler Gray, junior Heather Fields handled all the setting duties but was more than up to the task as she notched 56 helpers.
With the win, Union improves to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the AAC. St. Andrews is now 6-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
By the Numbers
- This is the sixth time this season Moore and Merritt have recorded double-digit kills in the same match.
- Fields' 56 assists is the most by a Lady Bulldogs since the 2009 season. The last time a Union setter posted 50-plus assists in a match was on Sept. 22, 2009, when Monica Moreland had 54.
- Union has won eight of its last nine matches.
Union returns home Tuesday to play host to Milligan (Tenn.) in an AAC showdown. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
