BRISTOL, Va. - Virginia Intermont's Zana Ali scored two second half goals, pacing the host Cobras to a 2-1 victory over the Union College men's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Sugar Hollow Park in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
With the loss, Union fell to 5-5-1 overall, 2-3 in the AAC, while Virginia Intermont improved to 4-5, 2-2 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first half, neither team was able to crack the scoreboard, as both goalkeepers had strong halves. For Union, CJ Hopkins made two saves, while VI keeper Calvin Anderson stopped four Bulldog shots to keep the match scoreless as it entered intermission.
In the outset of the second half, VI broke the scoreless tie with an Ali goal in the 54th minute. Union had their chances to tie the match back up throughout the half, but Anderson once again stopped the Bulldogs from scoring, making three more saves to keep Union off the scoreboard.
VI put the match away in the 80th minute, as Ali scored his second goal to put the Cobras up by two. Union tried to mount a comeback late, as Steve Moore scored an unassisted goal (his first of the year) with 2:40 remaining in regulation to make it a one score game.
But, it was too little, too late for the Bulldogs, as the Cobras hung on over the final few minutes to clinch the home conference win.
Overall, Union outshot VI 16-15 in the contest. In net, Hopkins ended the night with five saves, while VI's Anderson made eight saves in the win.
