MONTREAT, N.C. - The Union volleyball team overcame a huge deficit to pull out a 3-2, Appalachian Athletic Conference victory at Montreat (N.C.) on Tuesday.
Union dropped the first two sets 25-16 and 25-20 before rallying to win the final three frames by the scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 15-12.
"I'm extremely proud of the girls," said Union head coach Jeremy Wise. "They never got down and never gave. They kept battling."
The Lady Cavaliers came out strong and dominated the first set, posting a nine-point win. Montreat continued its strong play in the second set, but Union began to fight back. However, the surge was too late, too little to win the set as Montreat held on for the 25-20 decision.
In the third set, the Bulldogs began rolling and posted 25-20 win before taking the fourth frame 25-17. Union trailed 6-2 in the fifth and final set, prompting Wise to call a timeout. The Bulldog regrouped and stormed back, taking the set 15-12 and match 3-2.
With the win, the Bulldogs extend their win streak to five matches as they improve to 14-5 overall and 8-2 in the AAC. Montreat drops to 11-9 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
Paige Moore and Caity Merritt led Union with 18 kills apiece with Karina Ramos adding nine. Merritt also had 3.5 blocks. Heather Fields recorded a double-double with 38 assists and 15 digs, while Ana Calaza notched 20 digs.
